Grade summary

The available information suggests that PTT Global Chemical produces one SIN List substance, which is not officially recognised as a chemical of high concern by the EU. However, 99% of the company’s production takes place outside the EU and US, which means that data on the majority of production is not publicly available. The company follows several voluntary standards of good conduct, but has nonetheless been involved in a number of environmental violations over the last ten years, including a large oil spill that released more than 50 tons of crude oil into the Gulf of Thailand.

Opportunities for improvement

  1. Add transparency to the hazardous product portfolio. We can only rank 1% of PTT Global Chemical’s overall production since the rest takes place outside the EU and US. For other regions there are no reliable and publicly available sources for identifying producers of hazardous chemicals. Informing ChemSec of hazardous chemical production outside the EU and US could help raise the company’s score.
  2. PTT Global Chemical should eliminate the use of hazardous ingredients and develop safer alternatives. The company has established a Green Chemicals business unit to “become a leader in chemical products for the environment”, which is a good start.
  3. Right from the outset, PTT Global Chemical’s product design should strive to use only non-hazardous ingredients, and the company should only market new products that are free from harmful chemicals.

PTT Global Chemical has a method in place to screen and assess the sustainability of its products and includes intrinsic hazards of ingredients in the screening process. The company does not follow the principles of green chemistry or use the GreenScreen assessment tool, nor does it exclude substances with toxic properties from new products. In 2013, the company caused a major oil spill when more than 50 tons of crude oil leaked into the Gulf of Thailand. The clean-up operations by the company were then criticised because of the use of chemical dispersant Slickgone NS, which could have caused long-term negative impacts. In 2017, the government of Indonesia sued PTT Global Chemical for 2 billion USD for the restoration of mangrove forests, coral reefs and sea grass fields in the East Nusa Tenggara province.
