Transparency

A sound system of chemicals management is fundamental for chemical companies, especially those with a large share of hazardous substances in their production. A transparent approach to product and process ingredients is a good indication of the direction in which a company is moving.

Criteria and calculations in this category

  1. The company publishes the percentage of revenue created with products that contain intentionally added or unintentionally present hazardous substances.
  2. The company publishes volumes of hazardous substances that leave the company’s facilities as products or services on a global level.
  3. The company publishes volumes of hazardous substances that leave the company’s facilities as emissions on a global level.
  4. The company reports on their global hazardous substances portfolio (beyond EU/US) on a substance-by-substance basis.
  5. Response to ChemSec.

Additional points can be awarded depending on how well the company defines hazardous substances:

  • REACH Candidate list substances or PRTR substances for emissions
  • REACH Candidate list substances and classified SoCs (CSRD)
  • Meeting the criteria for SVHC (= SIN List), SoC, and REACH article 57 (persistence)

Points are deducted if revenue and/or volumes are reported as a lump sum, while additional points may be awarded if they are reported by hazard class or, even better, on a substance-by-substance basis.
