Grade summary

Indorama Ventures does not produce any SIN List chemicals or substances officially recognised as chemicals of high concern by the EU. The company has a method in place to screen and assess the sustainability of its products and includes intrinsic hazards of ingredients in the screening process. It also has a phase-out strategy for hazardous substances. The company follows several voluntary standards of good conduct and has not been involved in any controversies over the last ten years.

Opportunities for improvement

1. Market the company’s safer alternatives more actively. We identified a couple of less-toxic alternatives, and would like to see more of these products marketed to a wider audience.
2. Indorama states that it seeks ways to lower environmental impact and product toxicity by replacing problematic chemicals with materials and alternatives that, based on their chemistry, are safe. We would like to see a clear commitment to avoid hazardous chemicals from the very beginning of the design process for new products.
3. Add transparency to the hazardous product portfolio. Indorama Ventures is the only company publicly that states it is “proactively removing products on the SIN List”. For the two thirds of the company’s production portfolio that we are able to rank, Indorama is “SIN-free”. However, by informing ChemSec of its chemical production outside the EU and US the company could raise its score.
